Virginia Ailene Dye Simons, 70, of Morganfield, died at 9:50 am., Sunday, August 17, 2003 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Ind.

Mrs. Simons was preceded in death by her parents Virgie and Leroy Dye Sr.

Survivors include one daughter Tina Holt of Evansville, Ind.; one son, Roy Vest of Okinawa, Japan; four brothers, Lonnie Dye of Evansville, Bobby Dye of Harrisburg, Ill., Timmie Dye of Griffith, Ind., and Donald Dye of Indiana, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Morganfield with Father Sean Kopcznski and Father Gerald Baker officiating. Friends may call until funeral time Today at Whitsell's Funeral Home in Morganfield.

William Robert Pfingston, 83, of Morganfield died at 12:50 p.m., Saturday, August 16, 2003 at Methodist Hospital Union County.

Mr. Pfingston was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Morganfield.

He was a charter member of Cat Alley Quail Club and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a native of Henderson County, but lived in Union Country and retired after 55 years as a Union County farmer. He loved hunting and wildlife and was an avid wood carver.

He was preceded in death by two sisters Emma Gardner and Betty Foster; and a brother Paul Pfingston.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years Cara Lois Pfingston; three daughters, Bobbye Potts and Molly Hendrickson, both of Morganfield and Melody Burbage of Henderson; two sons, Paul "Tony" Pfingston of Sturgis and Robert Michael Pfingston of Morganfield; two sisters Ruth Yoes of Henderson and Anna Hallenbrook of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Eddie Pfingston of Morganfield; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with Bro. Ken Brown officiating. Burial was in the Fairmont Cemetery in Henderson.

Kathleen Hammack Inge, 91, formerly of Sturgis, died Friday, August 15, 2003 at The Hermitage Nursing Home in Owensboro.

Mrs. Inge was born Oct. 29, 1911 in Sturgis and lived there most of her life. She owned and operated Kathleen's Beauty Shop until she retired in 1975. She loved her family and enjoyed telling great stories about the past.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis all her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, James Taylor Inge, Oct. 13, 1991.

Survivors include one son Jim Inge and wife Judi of Feltwell, England; and one daughter Marie and husband Joe Hancock of Owensboro; six grandchildren, Ashley Hancock Frey, Alan Hancock, Adam Hancock, James Inge, Taylor Inge and Grant Inge.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 17 at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Rev. Don Phelps officiating. Burial was in the Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Association or First Baptist Church in Sturgis.

Raymond L. "Red" Girten, 82, of Uniontown, died at 9:30 p.m., Friday, August 15, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Girten was a UMWA retiree member of the VFW Post 5488 and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Lisa M. Peak of Waverly; two sons Donald R. and Dennis K. Girten, both of Uniontown; six grandchildren, Christopher A. Girten, Shelly A. Towns, Joshua A. Peak, Toni M. Peak, Kyle M. Girten, and Kelsey J Girten; and one great-grandchild, Cainan G. Towns.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 18 at St. Agnes Church in Uniontown with Father Terry Devine officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Hospice.

Robert Crowdus, 81, of Morganfield, died at 6:40 a.m., Friday, August 15, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Crowdus was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and farming. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Catherine Crowdus, Aug. 4, 2003; a brother Lloyd Crowdus; and three sisters, Ebe Obermier, Margaret French and Camilla Hagan.

Survivors include seven daughters, Betty Grant and Jan Book, both of Henderson, Pat French of Sturgis, Linda Ruark of Uniontown, Gail Wolfe of Waverly, Marie McClure of Morganfield and Rita Oye of Palmdale, Calif.; four sons, Fred Crowdus and Bill Crowdus, both of Morganfield, Joe Crowdus of Evansville, Ind., and Allen Crowdus of Lexington; two brothers, Marion Crowdus and Joe Crowdus, both of Morganfield; 30 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 18, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Morganfield with Father Terry Devine and Father Gerald Baker officiating. Burial was in the St. Ann Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Hospice or St. Ann Catholic Church.

Lela Foster, 79, of Sturgis, died at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2003 at Morganfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include two sisters, Lillion Stone of Sturgis and Beulah Burns of California; two brothers, Melvin Foster of Sturgis and L.D. Foster of Henderson; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 16 at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Rev. Jimmy Sizemore officiating. Burial was in the Pride-Bordley Cemetery in Union County.

Dona Barnard, 95, of Sturgis, died at 6:40 a.m., Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at Methodist Hospital Union County.

Survivors include one daughter, Jackie Edens of Sturgis; one stepdaughter, Patsy Barnard Steelman of Sturgis; one son, Tommie Stewart of Webster County; four grandchildren, Mike Edens of Madisonville, Wally Stewart and Addonis Stewart Roy, both of Dixon and Elise Stewart Roy of Fredonia; two step-grandchildren, Paul and Susan Steelman, both of Sturgis; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug., 15, at Grangertown Baptist Church with Rev. John Baker officiating. Burial was in the Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grangertown Baptist Church building fund.

Imogene Dean, 77, of Sturgis, died at 9:55 a.m., Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at her residence.

Mrs. Dean was preceded in death by her husband Milton Dean in 2001.

Survivors include four daughters, Mildred Brack and Frances Berry, both of Henderson and Bonnie Garcia and Connie Mackey, both of Sturgis; four sons, John Dailey, Gary Dean and Cary Dean, all of Sturgis and Donnie Dean of St. Anne, Ill.; one sister, Lula David of Beaverville, Ill.; one brother Clyde Dailey of Indiana; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 15, at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Rev. Don Collins and Rev. Jerry Seay officiating. Burial was in the Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis.

J.W. "Squeaky" Carmon, 80, of Uniontown, died at 10:20 a.m., Tuesday, August 12, 2003, at Methodist Hospital Union County.

Mr. Carmon was a farmer, coal miner and an oil producer. He was a 50-year member of Uniontown Masonic Lodge and a member of the Uniontown Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter Connie Sue Slaughters of Haw River, N.C.; two sons, Larry Carmon of Uniontown and James Louis Carmon of Dekoven; two sisters, Dora Mae and Katherine of St. Louis; two brothers, Tom Carmon of Mountain Grove, Mo. and Ernest Lee Carmon of Washington; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 14, at Uniontown Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Reynolds officiating, burial was in the Morganfield Odd Fellow Cemetery.

Vergie H. Wilson, 84, of Waverly, died at 5:30 p.m., Monday, August 11, 2003 at Colonial Terrace Nursing Home in Sebree.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of the former East End Tabernacle.

She was preceded in death by her husband Claude Wilson, April 10, 1990.

Survivors include three daughters, Jean Markham of Henderson and Emma Lou Smith and Oma Bowyer, both of Lafayette, Ind.; two sons George Wilson and Wayne Wilson, both of Waverly; one sister, Lorene Parrish of Pacific, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 14, at Tapp Funeral Home in Henderson with the Revs. Tony Payne and Freddie Mosley officiating. Burial was in the Shady Grove Cemetery in Poole.

Richard C. Singleton, 71, of Nicholasville, Ky., died Monday, August 11, 2003 at Saint Joseph Hospital of cancer.

He is survived by his wife Jane Wathen Singleton, formerly of Union County.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass or Nicholasville Church of Christ.

John William Shofner, 72, of Sturgis, died at 11:20 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Shofner was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Peabody Coal Company in 1980.

He was preceded in death by his parents Grover Lee and Mary Virginia Shofner; six sisters, Kathryn Heffington, Mary Wright, Dot Morgan, Ruth Bayliss, Betty Walker and Regina Lemon.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years Joyce Shofner; three daughters, Debby Higgs and Renita Greenwell, both of Morganfield and Dawn Travis of Marion, Ky.; one son John Shofner Jr., of Sturgis; three stepsisters, Sara Logan and Mary McGill, both of Sturgis and Fannie Little of Colorado; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 8 at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Rev. John Baker and Rev. Noble Cobb officiating. Burial was in the Bells Mines Cemetery in Crittenden County.
