Charles Dennis "Denny" Heffington, 58, of Newnan, Ga., formerly of Morganfield, died Friday, July 18, 2003 in Jacksonville, Fla., of a massive heart attack.

Denny was born and raised in Morganfield where he farmed and did welding.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lacy Heffington; and a younger sister Susan Ricketts.

Survivors include his mother Georgetta Heffington of Tallahassee, Fla.; one daughter, Jamie Denise of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, David Allen of Atlanta, Ga., and Danny Joe of Newnan; two brothers, Gerald of Tallahassee and Thomas of Gainsville, Fla.; one sister Bonnie Heffington of Janesville, Wis.

A private memorial service will be held July 25 at Mount Eagle Tennessee State Park, where Denny loved to go to relax.

Joseph C. Spalding, 83, of Louisville, formerly of Uniontown, died Friday, July 18, 2003 at Nazareth Home in Louisville.

Mr. Spalding was a native of Uniontown and served honorably in he Army Air Corps during World War II. After attending Loyola University in New Orleans, La., he received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame. He began his career as a staff attorney with Shell Oil company and retired as the corporate secretary and deputy general counsel.

Joe was admitted to the Bar in the states of Kentucky, New York, Colorado and Texas. After private practice in Houston, Texas, he returned to Kentucky and practiced first with Thomason and Spalding and most recently as a member of Carey Niemi Stout and Spalding.

He formerly was a member of the Hunting Creek Country Club. He was a devoted member of St. Louis Bertrand Catholic church. He maintained a keen interest in Notre Dame Fighting Irish football and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was preceded in death by his parents Victor Lee and Mary Willie Spalding; and five brothers and a sister.

Survivors include two sisters, Lucy Thomason of Louisville and Mildred Orth of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and seven nephews, two nieces and their children.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 23, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Uniontown with Father Pike Powell officiating. Burial will be in the St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call until service time Wednesday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield.

Lester E. "P.I." Downing Sr., 78, of Morganfield, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2003 at Methodist Hospital Union County.

Mr. Downing was a World War II veteran and retired from Island Creek Coal Co. in 1987.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years Agnes E. Downing; one daughter Brenda D. Ricketts of Morganfield; two sons, Lester E. Downing Jr., of Montreux, Switzerland and Pete Downing of Madisonville; a niece, Pat Duncan, who was like a sister to him; four grandchildren, Tara McGar of Madisonville, Jarad Downing of Indianapolis, Aaron Downing of Morganfield and Suzanne Graham of Greenville; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 21 at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with T.A. Prickett officiating. Burial was in the Odd Fellow Cemetery in Morganfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ruth Waters Nicholson, 93, of Evansville, Ind., died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Good Samaritan Home.

Ruth was one of eleven children born to Carrie and Charles Waters. She was very active in volunteer work becoming President of Perry Heights P.T.A., a member of Vanderburgh County Court House Auxiliary, charter member of Willard Library Foundation and Voices for the Republican Women's Club.

While living in Henderson, she co-owned the Eagle Produce Market. In Henderson she became president of Henderson's City High P.T.A., a volunteer of Methodist Hospital Auxiliary, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the First Baptist Church.

She retired from W.T. Grant and Ben Franklin working until was 87 years of age.

Being patriotic and interested in genealogy she became Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, had her grandchildren enrolled in CAR and grandsons enrolled in SAR.

Ruth attended Lynnville High School where she was a member of the girls basketball team.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Richard Nicholson Jr.; a son Robert Joseph Nicholson; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Diane Wilson.

Survivors include four daughters, Jeanne Shoulders, Mary Gibson and Jackie Devoy, all of Evansville; four sons, Richard, David Isaac and Edward Wayne Nicholson, all of Evansville and James Alan Nicholson of Morganfield; 24 grandchildren; one brother Carl Waters of Evansville; 51 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 20, at Westwood General Baptist Church with Brother James Nicholson, Pastor Bret Nicholson and Jerry Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Tupman Cemetery in Evansville.

Rick Roe, 42, of St. Louis, Mo., formerly of Shawneetown and Equality, Ill., died Wednesday, July 16, 2003.

Mr. Roe was born Jan. 27, 1961 in Harrisburg, Ill., to the late Louis Vancleve and Elsie Lucille (Tite) Roe.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Wally Brummett of Shawneetown, Ill.; a niece Misty Howton of Shawneetown; and several aunts and uncles.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 24, at 7 p.m. Family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. at the Vickery Funeral Chapel at Shawneetown. Reverend Ray Conley will officiate.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the High Ground Gospel Group for their ministry in music.

David Alan Garrett, 48, of Mayfield, formerly of Uniontown, died at 6:45 a.m., Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield.

Mr. Garrett was employed by Midstates Agriculture-Labor.

He was preceded in death by his father Walter Lee Garrett; and a sister Wanda Blackburn.

Survivors include his mother Mary Moore Moses of Calvert City; four sisters, Anita Pidcock of Calvert City, Charlotte Phelps of Marion, Joyce Givens of Murray and Dana Christensen of Salem, Ore.; and a brother Michael Dennis Garrett of Tigard, Ore.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19, at Collier Funeral Chapel with Bro. Morgan Mathis officiating.

James Chester Parker, 61, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Morganfield, died July 13, 2003 at Loretto Hospital in Chicago.

Mr. Parker was born August 29, 1941 in Morganfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents Amos and Irma Parker.

Survivors include three sisters, Linda Parker of Chicago and Yvonne Parker and Lalita Morrow, both of Morganfield; five brothers, Amos Leon Parker Jr., and Donald Parker, both of Chicago, Larry Parker of Henderson, and Dwight and Keith Parker, both of Morganfield; and a special aunt, Dorothy Crutcher of Morganfield.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19, at Bowman Chapel CME Church in Morganfield with Rev. Richard Pollard officiating. Burial was in the Odd Fellow Cemetery in Morganfield.
